Often, the answer is yes. A good number of dance programs require an audition—but acing it won’t get you out of preparing a good college application. Nor will a top-flight application sway a dance department that doesn’t think your technique is up to par. Some programs that don’t require auditions allow students to enter based on their college application but then require a department review at the end of the freshman year to determine of they can continue. There are also some excellent dance departments that don’t require an audition, don’t have a formal review, but simply monitor progress and advise students along the way.
