What happens at a college dance audition?

A typical audition starts with a ballet class. Then, there will usually be either a class or combination taught in another dance form like modern or jazz. There may also be an improvisation section so the school can gauge your creativity. At some point, you will most likely be asked to perform a solo (which may or may not be your own choreography), and then you will be interviewed.

Some schools will make a cut after each section of the audition while others will wait until the end. Auditions can be long, sometimes lasting all day, so plan accordingly.

Usually you will not know when leaving the audition whether or not you have been accepted.

Auditions may vary greatly from school to school. For specifics, it’s best to contact the school’s dance department directly.
