Ask the Experts

If my first-choice university accepts me but its dance department doesn’t, what are my options?

One option is to take dance as a non-major and then re-audition the next year. After additional training and the opportunity to better acquaint the faculty with your work ethic, talent and potential, you might get in. But you have to be willing to take the chance that you won’t.

If the only program that accepts you is not a top choice, you might start there and then transfer to a “better” school later. But, again, it’s a risk since there are no guarantees that you’ll eventually be accepted at your first choices.

Though getting turned down by a department is disappointing, it can also give you valuable information. Each program is different and their styles and focuses vary. Even if you’re a great technician, a department that emphasizes choreography may not accept you if you’re not comfortable with improv and composition. So sometimes the best option is to look for schools that are a better fit. And remember, not all strong liberal arts programs even require auditions.
